With ERC added to our Maritime English Communication program, we now provide several courses for maritime professionals and people working in the related sectors. Each Maritime English course in the Communication program is targeted at a specific audience, e.g., marine engineers, but all courses are broad enough to be relevant to professionals (closely) working with seafarers.
The Engine Room Communication course has sister curricula, Cargo & Cargo Handling and Maritime English: Basics. Together they provide opportunities for maritime professionals to develop their Maritime English, while integrating it with general English skills.
There are 34 videos in ERC spanning across nine units, as well as additional learning material. After completing the course, the participant takes a final online multiple-choice test. People who successfully pass the end test can also obtain a certificate valid for three years. The course introduction and example videos are available on this website.
The new course Maritime English: Engine Room Communication is available on the platform EnglishCentral. The EnglishCentral, Inc. platform offers speech technology, AI and other innovative technologies and sound methods to help students and professionals measurably improve their English language skills. Participants in the maritime English course Engine Room Communication can test and extend their maritime vocabulary. The methodology and technology of the platform and course also help develop and improve other English language skills such as pronunciation, speaking, fluency, listening and grammar.
Engine Room Communication is based on various educational maritime sources, one of them being International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP). The course touches on some of the subjects mentioned on the IMO’s list and, together with the Cargo & Cargo Handling course, provides many examples on how to use SMCP items in the daily work and life onboard.
On top of enriching and structuring the Maritime English vocabulary, ERC covers many general language matters that can help seafarers and maritime professionals communicate in a safer and more efficient way and have a greater social cohesion and wellbeing both onboard and ashore.
