The benefits of better communication in English in 'bullets':
The spoken text lines in the Engine Room Communication course of our program contain around 2,500 words in total. A lot of words are used several times of course. An analysis of the full text shows that some 500 different words are used. Many of these are matched with IMO's well-known SMCP list, among which a number of them match with the 'safety on board' section of that list. Other words and phrases chosen because they can serve as a standard basic vocabulary for maritime engineers and people that work with engineers and technicians in the maritime industry and related sectors.
Thirty short videos are used in the course, each with several learning activities and a lesson plan that can be used by tutors and teachers and for self-study.
Speech technology developed by our partner EnglishCentral helps participants verify and improve correct pronunciation of the maritime vocabulary used in the course. Besides the videos the course consists of extra interactive online lessons.
What follows is an overview of the course (7 units containing 30 videos and extra interactive lessons).
After every four videos relevant words that have been used in the videos are quizzed. Words are added to a personal study list that monitors progress in building a relevant vocabulary.
At the end of the course every participant is invited for an online test to measure if all learning goals for this course are attained.
