Maritime English 'Cargo & Cargo Handling' Course

Building a maritime vocabulary that helps improve communication on board
Arriving in a port, loading and unloading a ship, sticking to planned turnaround times and complying to all rules and regulations all require a lot of communication between crew members, authorities and many others involved. This is the reason we have chosen to build a specific vocabulary for our Maritime English Education Program (MEEP) that helps improve safety and efficiency in a very practical way. in this article more about the contents of our cargo & cargp handling video course and the maritime English vocabulary we think is most practical and relevant.

English vocabulary for maritime professionals

This course is developed for seafarers and other professionals working in the maritime industry. It helps develop or strengthen a specific maritime vocabulary. The words that are used and that participants in Spot On Learning's Maritime English Education Program learn are useful for all on board merchant ships and for many professionals involved in managing, running and servicing cargo ships.

Specific idiom based on SMCP list and practice

The spoken text lines in the Cargo & Cargo Handling course of our program contain some 3,000 words in total. A lot of words are used several times of course. An analysis of the full text shows that some 500 different words are used. Many of these are matched with IMO's well-known SMCP list, most of them from the 'cargo & cargo handling' phrases and others from the 'safety on board' section of the list. Arriving in a port, loading and unloading a ship, sticking to planned turnaround times and complying to all rules and regulations all require a lot of communication between crew members, authorities and many others involved. This is the reason we have chosen to build a specific vocabulary for this course that is used in practice on board. Many words that participants in the program will learn are related to cargo & cargo handling, other subjects are based on standard procedures like Iike ISPS security measures. Equipment that is often being used during a stay in the port, regular checks and inspections and other very practical matters are covered in 25 short videos used in the course. Intro video Cargo & Cargo Handling Course

The maritime English course 'Cargo & Cargo Handling' helps seafarers improve their English pronunciation and enlarge their maritime English vocabulary. The course consists of 25 videos on the EnglishCentral platform. That platform, that is being used in over 100 countries worldwide, uses innovative speech technology to provide users with detailed feedback about their pronunciation. It also helps expand and test their vocabulary and understanding of spoken English. In this series of videos words and phrases are used that are important in order to work safely and efficiently and communicate with colleagues, workers and officials in ports and on shore. Many words are taken from the SMCP list by IMO.
