The Cargo & Cargo Handling course can be used for:
This course is developed for seafarers and other professionals working in the maritime industry. It helps develop or strengthen a specific maritime vocabulary. The words that are used and that participants in Spot On Learning's Maritime English Education Program learn are useful for all on board merchant ships and for many professionals involved in managing, running and servicing cargo ships.
Our clients want their crewmembers to be effective, stay safe and learn continuously to adapt to changing requirements and circumstances. Our Maritime English language courses are designed to support these causes. In addition, being able to communicate with people from many backgrounds influences social wellbeing and motivation in a positive way.
The spoken text lines in the Cargo & Cargo Handling course of our program contain 1round 2,500 words in total. A lot of words are used several times of course. An analysis of the full text shows that some 500 different words are used. Many of these are matched with IMO's well-known SMCP list, most of them from the 'cargo & cargo handling' phrases and others from the 'safety on board' section of the list. Arriving in a port, loading and unloading a ship, sticking to planned turnaround times and complying to all rules and regulations all require a lot of communication between crew members, authorities and many others involved. This is the reason we have chosen to build a specific vocabulary for this course that is used in practice on board. Many words that participants in the program will learn are related to cargo & cargo handling, other subjects are based on standard procedures Iike ISPS security measures. Equipment that is often being used during a stay in the port, regular checks and inspections and other very practical matters are covered in 25 short videos used in the course. What follows is a list of the videos that are part of the course (6 units containing 25 videos).

After every four videos relevant words that have been used in the videos are quizzed. Words are added to a personal study list that monitors progress in building a relevant vocabulary.
At the end of the course every participant is invited for an online test to measure if all learning goals for this course are attained.
